As much of the population, but especially sports coaches, must be trained in the recognition of a serious collapse. The case of the Dutch footballer Abdelhak Nouri, who collapsed in a professional match, is instructive. The defibrillator is seen being carried on to the pitch within 15 seconds of the collapse: however it is not attached for more than 5 minutes. Although this footballer survived, he has been left with severe and permanent brain damage.
Recognition of the seriousness of the situation, and a low threshold for the application of a defibrillator, should be part of routine training. First aid training should be given to as many of the public as possible.
